UNIT 15 APPROACHES TO LANGUAGE TEACHING
An approach to
language teaching may refer to our view of how language learning takes place in
other words, the ways of how we teach language it may be that language is a set
of grammar rules, and there are many other ways in which teaching can take
place and there are other supporters of communicative
approaches like seeing language as a tool to communicate meaning, and
that we learn language by using it in communicative
activities. There are two typical approaches the structural approach that sees language as a system of structures and says that
language is learnt by controlled
practice. In this approach oral
skills are learnt before the written skills. Then we have the Task-based learning, this approach
sees language as a tool to communicate by using functions vocabulary, structures and discourse, so language is learnt by using it and classroom
activities are based on problem-solving
tasks.
It is difficult
to say if an approach is better than other, but teachers can use any of them
depending on the group of students that he or she is working with.
