UNIT12 DIFFERENCES BETWEEN L1 AND L2 LEARNING

UNIT12 DIFFERENCES BETWEEN L1 AND L2 LEARNING

Here we recognized the differences between languages 1 and 2. First, the context in which each language is acquired is crucial because they are set in different ways. Then, there is a huge difference starting from the age in which learners acquire each one. L1 starts since the childhood when the learner is a baby and for L2 it may start lately at school.
L1 is learnt by exposure learners hear the language and pick it up. Meanwhile for L2 it is mostly taught by focusing on form or specific language or individual words.
Also for L1 learners may get lots of praise when using language and this motivate them intrinsically.  On the other hand for L2 language learners are guided by controlled practice.
Sometimes, talking about L2, learners may feel not motivated but the job of the teacher is to create intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for them, by building confidence in the classroom.

UNIT 11 THE ROLE OF ERROR

UNIT 11 THE ROLE OF ERROR

When studying this unit I found out that making mistakes must not be consider a taboo or a bad result from teaching. Here we understand that mistakes are part of learning and play an important role when teaching because that is when you realize the results of your teaching and also you can see the development of the learner.

There is a categorization of mistakes they can be consider as errors, that is when learners try to use language beyond their level of current knowledge, and it is because they are still processing the new information.
Then, there are slips that generally are the result of tiredness and they do not realize when they do this, and it can be inferred that they did not simply pay attention to what they were saying.
In addition, there is another factor that make learners be confused and this is interference of the mother tongue when learners use lexis or grammatical rules from their mother tongue, and this also may be cause by overgeneralization  when they learn a rule and apply it to everything.
In this case, I will take errors as an advantage to help my students and realize where they are weak and help them to improve their language by looking at their own errors, and notice them in order to avoid fossilization.

UNIT 10 EXPOSURE AND FOCUS ON FORM

UNIT 10 EXPOSURE AND FOCUS ON FORM

In this unit I learnt that experts say that there are two ways to learn a foreign language, the first is by exposure, and this works better for young learners that pick up the language easily, just like they acquire their first language. However, here it was found that for adult or older learner exposure is not enough and they have to focus on form, which is to notice how language works like grammar pronunciation or functions.
Then, we analyze the ways in how we learn a language. First, that after acquisition you are able to work the language out. Second, interaction when we can understand if people understand us or not. Talking about interaction and acquisition it is a quick way to learn from my own experience that is what helped me to work out the language.
For this reason I will encourage role plays in my classroom so students will find a source where they can use the language with comprehension tasks and they can be exposed to it.
